Excited to have had our very own hog release at USS HQ!
'Nelly' to Sheila at Braes (Nelly was her granny's name which was nice)
'Katie' to Rebecca at Strathkanaird (hopefully will meet Di'd couple, and 'Romeo' who we think is still out there looking for love!)
'Inshes' was almost homeless as the intended new home wasn't available and was getting a little close to release time, but remembered that
Ullapool Sea Savers HQ is in a lovely spot and has a great composting area full of lovely things (for a hog), so decided to locate there as is close to 2 known hog-hot-spots.
I know of 22 we've released so far around the area, but I think I forgot to list 4 when we started and didn't realise this was going to become a 'plan'... Hopefully, this will start helping the local population build up and spread, so keep eyes out, especially next spring.
Hoping for some more yet, so please keep messaging if oyu think oyu might be up for it - but remember it will need a hog house, and commitment to feed/water for a couple of weeks and needs to be a suitable area.
Places outside of Ullapool are also asking, and
Jane Wilson and I (and
Ullapool Sea Savers) are chatting about a possible means of expanding this, that might be a fun way of assessing if you have hogs in a new area already or not too - thik will be a winter plan to be ready for next year but could be good funa nd help get hogs reestablished in the area, so do message and let me know if interested as will keep building up a list of postential sites and try to include if can.
Also, worth considering doing things to help the ones that are here too - make 'hog highways' between fence and walls so they can move between gardens, leave out hog food, leave some brush and branches and stuff piled in places for them to nest and encourage things they like to eat, and don't use poisons for slugs and things - get these guys to eat them instead, DON'T give them bread and/or milk, and put escape routes in ponds or grated/drop down areas.
And please check out and like/follow/support/become a relay driver for
Highland Wildlife Rescue, as they are doing lots for hogs and all the other highland wildlife up here too.
