Some of the Sea Savers were out helping Scottish Wildlife Trust - Living Seas at a beach clean at Altandhu by Achiltibuie today.

Lots of volunteers managed to clean up 490 kg of rubbish, mostly bits of twine and rope but also some fish farm pipes - Poppy, Caillin and Maia managed to dig one pipe ut of the beach by hand, sp special points for that! Living Seas have put a new beach clean station there to allow people to do smaller cleans when they visit the beach and will hopefully keep the quantities down and help keep the beach cleaner.
Having finally got the fishfarm feed pipe out from under the rock, the kids tried hauling it up the beach. These pipes are seriously heavy and they gave it really good shot. Fortunately, there were some heroic quad drivers about that ultimately helped to get this shifted to the top of the beach (along with all the others.)
This is not work that should be left to communities and children. The profits that these fish farms make are considerable. Perhaps the cost of uplifting these pipes could be borne by those profit margins, rather than the time and energy of local communities? Just a thought.
